Hi Sarah – I haven’t visited you guys in ages and popped over to see what’s up.
There are lots of answers to the questions you’ve posed. Depending on the book, author, and agent, it can be anything from significant rewriting to a quick submission. Some agents are more hands-on than others. Often newer agents have more time to pair with greener writers, and work will be done on the book before sending it out – which was my first experience with an agent…
After about a year with my first agency, during which my first novel grew and evolved and found itself, my agent and I decided to part ways (on very friendly terms), and I started the search again. I’ve since found new representation, and this time my agent sent the book out right away.
After submission, the waiting starts again, and you shift gears and work on another project to maintain your sanity. Also because there is no guarantee your agent will find someone to buy your first book, and you need something new in the hopper.
Hopefully your agent finds a buyer, but if not, a couple of things may happen. You may get enough interest and feedback from editors that you decide to rewrite, or your agent may set it aside for a later attempt and move on to your next project.
I am no expert but have been around the block a time or two and am happy to answer questions.
Good luck to you in your agent quest, Sarah, and to everyone else who is looking!

@Sharon, Thanks so much. I hope we all get to find out this process, but it’s good to hear some of the things that can happen. I have a friend in the rewrite portion of this equation right now.
