Good To Know You

fork1

When I go out to dinner at a restaurant I immediately turn my fork sideways and squint to see if it has straight tines. I mortified my husband when we started dating because I asked the waiter for a new fork. Twice. Now my husband readily trades me forks whenever I ask.

Why am I so obsessed fastidious about my fork?

Growing up, I spent eight years with metal in my mouth. Braces, permanent retainers, jaw enlarging devices.  So I refused to eat with a fork that would scrape against these contraptions.  The aversion kept with me, even after achieving (nearly) perfect teeth.

What would your character do in a restaurant? And what does that hint about her backstory?

My character, Susy, was raised in a family that was, to put it nicely, a little rough around the edges. Eating in a restaurant would be very traumatic for her as she would be unsure what to do with different forks, napkins in laps, and so forth. She would probably eat a lot less than usual if she was in a restaurant because she’d be a nervous wreck.

My MC would sit herself in a spot facing the doors, making sure there weren’t any blindspots behind her. She’d probably check out the bathroom for a possible exit strategy and notice everyone and everything around her. Who came in, who left. She wouldn’t really enjoy the meal.

My male MC would likely chat up the hostess, bus boy, and waitress. He’d find out everything about them. How many kids, where they were married, etc. He’d likely order whatever was recommended and get a free dessert just for being so personable.

My character would get spaghetti all over her shirt and be mortified about it. :)

My MC would sit and eat, forget about everyone else. She is the best warrior in the world, she doesn’t need to be paranoid when eating! She wouldn’t talk to anyone except for the waiter/waitress because he/she will have the bill and the MC likes to tie all her loose ends.

My MC would forget that other people could see her and eat more than most of the men in the place. Then she would get all stirred up when some man was rude to the barmaid and she’d pause in her meal to dress him down. Once he’d been sufficiently mortified, she’d finish her meal and buy a round of ale for anyone not frightened off.

By the way, I have crooked lower teeth, and over the years that’s caused the tines on several of our forks to go crooked. I’ll only eat with those forks at the house. I love crooked-tined forks!

Sam stares at hot guys and barely eats.

Drew would walk in with confidence, order, eat, and leave. All while making everyone aware of her. But only if she were on assignment. Otherwise, she’d hope no one saw her at all.

Those are my girls.
