Have you ever felt like the well of new characters has run dry? Try refreshing it by riding public transportation!

In the last few months I have been without a running vehicleand I have been forced to take public transportation. At first I grumbled and groaned especially on snowy days but I have recently realized the treasure trove of new characters that ride the bus and train with me every day.  I know this seems like a desperate attempt for fresh creativity but I have never met more interesting people than I have while taking my daily commute.  Case in point, yesterday I met a snaggletoothed woman that was obsessing over a womans yellow dress. Over and over she would say how pretty it was and how she wished she had a yellow dress and how cute it would look on her.  Some people would consider this woman to be crazy and feel sorry for her, but I immediately started to create her back story about the yellow dress.  She quickly became a believeable and very real character…because she was real and I was witness to her.  I have decided that if I am going to be a serious writer that I would take each inspiration no matter how small or bizzare it may seem at the time.

So far I have been lucky as to have an endless collection of characters dancing in my brain, however, I have met the most fascinating people at little hole-in-the-wall bars and at yard sales.
Observing people is definitely a worthy skill in a writer’s arsenal.

I do this! Particularly if I’ve forgotten to take a book to read. I look at people and imagine that what they’re wearing isn’t the ‘real’ them – so a boring suit conceals an actor on his way to a casting.

I’m always finding characters around me. I even ask strangers if I can take their picture so that I can put them in a file on my computer for potential characters.
Great post, and welcome Emily!

Some of us meet/see characters while we’re on the job, too. And public libraries, whether you work there or not, get all kinds of wackiness!

I discovered the same at the laundry mat. I dreaded having to go but once I got there! oooh! The dysfunctional couple in their 20s?? I loved them. She’ll dump his ass eventually as soon as she realizes he’s only ACTING like he has all the answers.

I saw this couple that were in their forties looking like they just came out of the disco era when I went to visit my TKD masters.

They were really something to see.

I’ve always done this, made up stories about random people who interested me.

I used to feel guilty about it, but now that I write, I think I’ve found my calling! No more guilt trips :D
