We were best friends, why would she just ditch me to go off with Christy?
I was bewildered as I watched Jana and Christy run through the field behind Christy’s house with tennis rackets. We had all been sitting in front of the big screen T.V. watching music video’s when Christy made some lame excuse to pull Jana into the other room.
“Hey Brenna, Jana and I have to go to play practice. Can you stay here and watch my sister’s?”
“What play?”
“Oh, the play our church is putting on.”
I had no idea about any play, not a member of their church, so I agreed to watch her younger sister’s so they could go to play practice.
It wouldn’t be so bad, after all Christy’s parents had cable and I could just sit back and watch MTV until they returned. It wasn’t until Corinne pointed out Christy and Jana running behind their house that I realized I had been ditched by my best friend and this snot nosed girl Christy. Fine if Jana didn’t want to be my friend I didn’t care.
Tears welled up in my eyes and a knot formed in my throat. Corinne put her hand on my arm and asked me why I was crying. She was too young to understand, but I felt the hot anger in my stomach.
Then the plan developed in my head. If they were going to ditch me then there was no way in hell that I was going to stick around and help out Christy. I told Corinne that I had to go home and I left. I walked home and didn’t think of Christy’s sisters again.
I bit of revenge on my part when Christy was grounded for a week for leaving her sisters home alone. It didn’t repair my friendship with Jana, that was pretty much the end of our friendship. I would never allow another girl to treat me like that again. Girls are so nasty!

“I’m sorry. But I kinda met this girl, and I want to ask her to marry me.”
Was he kidding? After relaying his undying love to me for the last eighteen months, telling me on more than one occasion that he wanted to marry me, spend forever with me, he’s now saying he’s met someone else.
I closed my eyes, fighting back tears.
And to tell me over the phone. What a coward!
“I’m really sorry.” His soft tone stabbed at my heart.
“Yeah, you are. You suck.” And I hung up.
My whole body shook. I couldn’t breathe.
“You ready?” Valine, my roommate, hollered. “We need to get going or we’ll be late!”
Crap. I now had to go to work and try to solve other people’s problems. I had to act cheery and pretend that my life hadn’t just fallen apart.
Well life just sucked, didn’t it?
I sucked it up, the best I could, and walked into the kitchen. As soon as Valine saw me, she shook her head.
“What happened? Did you finally talk to Brent?”
I nodded. No way I could tell her yet.
“Need a minute?”
I nodded again.
“Wanna call in sick?”
Shaking my head, I said, “No. But can we go to your house after work? I need a break.”
She smiled. “That’s a long drive. At least twelve hours. I don’t get off until eight.”
I shrugged. “Don’t care. Can we?”
Valine looped her arm through mine. “But of course. And when you’re ready, tell me what happened.”
(I will always love you Valine for being my friend. And thanks Brent for marrying Lisa so that I could find John!)

From a WiP:
I hated how I sounded.
So cruel.
So mad.
But I couldn’t stop myself now. I pushed past her and stomped downstairs.
At the bottom I turned back, fighting myself in my head.
It came out anyway.
The lie.
“I’m sorry I kissed you. I was just trying to hide from her.” I heard her gasp and knew I’d done just what I set out to do. The only thing that could come from saying that.
I hurt her.
I died as I headed out the door.
