My dad says that one of the creepiest things he read as a kid was the mad dog scene in To Kill a Mockingbird, because of one line that describes the dog coming forward down the street but walking on a diagonal. That single image was all it took to freak him out so much that he remembers it now, forty-plus years later.
Isn’t it amazing what just the right detail will do for a scene?
