Eden -

It actually worked really well. The story kept moving, and it was a nice shortcut in giving the character consistent and plausible behavior. It's quite likely I'll draw some on myself in future characters - difficult not to, since on some level that's the only frame of reference I have - but not to that extent, because I've now written that character and don't need to do it again.

You need a plot? What for?
:)
Even with NaNo, I don't have the slightest idea where this story is going. I've got witches and romance. Spells and evil mages. Same with any other time, I'll just see where it leads me.
Good luck Eden and all the other NaNo writers!

Anica -- so what did ya learn? Did it work to draw off of yourself for your character? I can see that happening during such an occasion. You need to get the writing done and those reactions are just instinctual. I'd think if you worked it right, it wouldn't be cheating....
Just curious to see how it all worked out for ya!

Go for it, and good luck! Trying new things is what NaNo's all about.

When I did NaNo in 2006, I basically started with a high-stakes situation and a character who (possibly cheatery) reacts to things much the way I do. I actually planned less for that story than I usually do - basically, I kept trying to come up with what could happen to make things tenser/worse. Then for my character's reaction, I'd pretty much think of how I would react. The result was quite different from what I usually write, but high-stakes and fun, and I definitely learned from it.

I say give yourself permission to do it and not worry about it. It might turn out to be crap and you can trash it. Or it might turn out to be one of the best things you've ever written. Either way, I suspect you will learn a lot by doing it.
