What is Love?

“Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being “in love” which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.”
-St. Augustine (from the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin)

This is the month of love. It’s sometimes simple, sometimes so complicated, it leaves broken hearts and tears.

What made your character fall in love? Were there many things, or was it simple?

In my current WIP, my hero was cursed by an angel to never find a love in his time. Later the angel feels guilty and breaks the rules of her curse by sending his soulmate back in time. I haven’t learned yet how they fall in love, but I have a feeling a sense of humor is involved.

Hmm… well, in my main WIP, my poor MC gets burned by his high school crush. :( But that’s not the point of the story, and I have better plans for him.

In the future, when he’s older and moved to a new city, he develops a little crush on a girl that works in a coffee shop. Once he gets to know her, she’s kind of moody and abrasive, and he likes her more for it. But she’s had a rough life and doesn’t trust guys too much… he finally wins her over with his dorky awesomeness though. Yay. :)

I haven’t fully worked out what makes these two eventually connect and fall in love in the “roots entwined” way, but in the little exercises I’ve written for them, I love their personalities and how they work together. But for now, I got my real WIP to deal with… :P

Romance is a main story arc for my series. I love playing with the characters, watching them interact. The one thing I’ve found writing the series is that I can’t force two characters falling in love. It has to feel natural. A couple of the minor romances surprised me, not expecting *them* to get together!

The two main characters do fall in love, but that wasn’t planned in the beginning. Tayvis was supposed to be a throwaway character, only for the first book. But Dace fell in love with him, and so did I. He’s in the series for good. The stories are much richer because of it.

I will mention here just one of my books where falling in love becomes an issue the lead character did not look for, wish for, or in his wildest dreams imagine possible.
The Evangelical, Reverend Paul Stringer attended a conference concerned with gay clergy. His intention being to confront the speaker, Canon Nick Palmer — a leading liberal High-Churchman — with opposing Biblical evidence and make nonsense of his stance.
BUT as Nick stood on the podium quoting the well known poem of love from St Paul’s letter to Corinthians, Paul Stringer’s heart was touched. He found his whole body reacting to the words spoken, to the voice speaking them, and to the man himself.
So begins a huge upheaval of his life and of his position as a minister within the Church of England…

Zephyr is in love with this girl that is really kind and is unafraid to express her feelings. Of course, Zephyr is shy and is waiting for a “sign” to make a move, but he needs to get a move on asking her out or she’ll move on.

Poor Zephyr!
