This is excellent advice. It's also, I think, advice that's frequently ignored by writers - even ones who feel like it's probably a good idea and maybe, like Ray, have suggested it to others.

It may seem like a lot of trouble to read a whole manuscript aloud, but I find it invaluable, especially for catching missing words and repetition. It's also great for realizing when a piece of dialogue doesn't work, sometimes just because you've inadvertently written a line that's tongue-twistery or otherwise difficult to say!

Yay for a guest post from Ray!
This is some of the best advice I've ever received and I'm glad to read it again since I'm doing final revisions of my novel and need more and more ways to fine-tune it before the official query process begins soon.
Reading aloud brings many errors to your attention. It's so easy to glaze over mistakes while reading normally, especially for people who read often...we read in groups of words, not individual words, and we fill in the gaps if something is missing without even realizing it... Giving your work a *voice* brings out these problems and helps to fix them.
Thanks so much for this, Ray! You always seem to be spot on with your advice (you helped the first two chapters of my novel IMMENSELY and I will never be able to thank you enough!)
Writers, take this advice =)
