You just made me laugh while eating breakfast. Now there is cereal on my couch. Thanks, Nic.

Sometimes it takes a good editor to point things out that don't quite mesh. I love the surprises my characters dish out while I'm writing. As long as the overall story ends up in the place I'm aiming at, I'm happy with the result.

I do hate it when characters suddenly act out of character. When Hiro killed Ando I quit watching Heroes entirely. There was no justification, no build-up that allowed me as a viewer to accept it as something he would do. I've been known to throw books across the room when the same thing happens.

Now I just have to make sure I didn't do it in *my* novels.

What a meaty post! I love the logical approach you take to the subject. Unreasonable consequences are the "speed bumps" that jar the reader out of the fictive dream and you've provided some sound advice for writers of all genres. Thank you!
