7 Success Strategies

My dad, bless his heart, still expects me to read my emails daily. He sent me an email for a free seminar on writing. Of course, the seminar was yesterday, but I clicked on the site and within minutes received an email from the authors say we could still listen. Here’s the email and sites for all those who need and/or want advice from two Best selling and Prize winning authors. I for one can’t wait to listen.

“7 Success Strategies Every Entrepreneurial Author
Needs to Know… Before Writing a Word.”

Are your character’s like you?

I know that a lot of writer’s use their own personality traits in character’s in their book.   Jane Austin used her whit with Elizabeth, her loyalty with Ann, her romanticism with Catherine, her hopes with Eleanor.

I am not a great writer such as Jane Austin, she wrote beautiful stories, but I can say that my character’s do have my personality.  In one form or another.  I am not sure if it is such a good thing. *wink*

I would like to know what personality trait you have that you have given to your characters?  I will start.  I love being an EMT.  I love it so much that I am going back to school to become a Paramedic.  One class you have to take is Human anatomy.  We have a cadaver lab and I was involved with working with the cadaver’s.  In fact our class was lucky to get a fresh one.  We got to watch the dissection of the male cadaver.  I can touch the cadaver with no problems, but the smell was horrific!  I could watch the dissection and help hold parts of the body, such as the heart, liver, and colon, but I could not go home and cut chicken.  The chicken grossed me out, not the cadaver.  I have one character that is super sensitive about smells and another that is a nurse, but she can’t stand to cook.

I may be extremely weird, but as my teenage foster daughter puts it, that’s how I roll.  I like having character’s that are just a bit off, a bit weird.

How about you, what personality traits do you have that you have given to a character?

Mary Kole is Teaching a Webinar!

Mary Kole is one of the first people who donated her time to WriteOnCon. When the conference was just a thought, we went to her with questions and ideas–she answered each and every one of them, and then made suggestions of her own.

On September 23rd, she’s teaching a webinar about writing for children with the folks at Writer’s Digest.

Here’s what she has to say about it:

You can enroll by clicking here. It’s the next best thing for all of you who have been waiting to see me live…and you don’t have to leave your pajamas! If you have to miss the live event itself and can’t call in, you can always register for the webinar and have access to the recording of it for one full year.

I pledge to answer all questions posed to me, either during the seminar or later, in writing, and, as a registered student, you will get a critique of the first 500 words of MG or YA novel or the first 300 words of your picture book manuscript, depending on what you’re writing. If I get a good turnout for this webinar, Writer’s Digest will host me again, and  you know how much I love getting teaching opportunities, so tell your friends!

That’s right–if you register for her webinar, you get a 500 word critique (300 if it’s a picture book) done by Mary herself!

I spend a lot of time looking at Mary’s critique notes, (Full disclosure: She’s my agent) and let me tell you–they are amazing. When she finds a problem with your work, she doesn’t just tell you it’s bad. She tells you why, and then gives you the tools to figure out how to fix itI’m a better writer because of Mary, and if she gives you notes on your manuscript, you will be, too.

So what the heck are you waiting for? Go sign up!

Book Review

Minder

A fun new novel by Kate Kaynak

WARNING: SPOILERS

(These spoilers are not enough to keep you from enjoying this fun book.)

Have you ever given “the evil eye” or wished someone dead? If so, be careful what you wish for. For 15 year old Maddie Dunn, such simple thoughts could bring agony and even death to those around her.

After three teenage boys are found dead after attacking Maddie, she is taken from her home and driven to a new school, Ganzfield, where others who can use their minds to achieve great things are found. But even among these unusual kids, G-forces, they’re called, Maddie finds she is still a rare Minder. She not only reads minds, she can project her nightmares into others’ dreams, can send pain through her thoughts if she is angry or scared enough.

Terrified, she escapes the onslaught of thoughts mingling with her own and finds sanctuary in an old church, only she is not alone. Trevor Laurence, the school’s only telekinetic, stays there, hiding from the powers he exhibits in his sleep, and becomes her solace and her new boyfriend.

When Trevor is kidnapped, Maddie, along with a few others who don’t fear her abilities, learn of a plot to overthrow Ganzfield and to take over governments by using the powers of G-forces. The group of teens thwart their plans. For now. And bring Trevor back to the school injured, but alive.

With Maddie’s powers to injure and kill with her mind, she is looked at to learn the control needed to take down this evil plan at controlling their kind. Whether she’ll pull it off or not, we’ll find out in book two, Adversary.

Minder is a fun, perfect read for anyone who looks for love, excitement, and a great plot.  I greatly enjoyed the easy reading novel. It just goes to show that love comes at the most unusual times, and in the last place you’d look. And that even outsiders can find their other half when fate intervenes.

My daughter and a few of her teen friends stole the book off my shelf and loved it too.

You can pick up Kate Kaynak’s Minder from Spencer Hill Press at Amazon, along with Adversary. And book three in the series, Legacy, comes out in January 2011. To learn more about Kate’s books visit her site www.ganzfield.com.

Useful Links for Writers

Writers in the internet age have a tremendous depository of resources available at the click of a mouse. Sometimes it can be a whole lot of information, and if you’re anything like me, you tend to get buzzed with reading too many sites.

Nonetheless, I find I’ve learned a lot by visiting writing-related websites, and thought maybe I could share a few of the sites I’ve found useful.

The list is completely subjective and random, and reflects my own interest in the genres I like. Some are related to book reviews, some provide writing advice, others help with writing markets, some are by renowned editors and agents. This is by no means a complete list of all the sites I visit, they’re just off the top of my head.

Here’s the list, and feel free to point us towards other sites writers could find useful in the comments to this post. Happy browsing!
