First favorite memory.

I could hardly sleep that night as I thought about going on our family vacation.  I hadn’t seen Jeff in 2 years and he and I used to be the best of friends.   I couldn’t wait to see him again.

The next morning my mom woke us up bright and early.  My older sister was in the bathroom already getting ready.  I had never cared before, but now I had a reason to look nice.  I could feel myslef becoming more and more annoyed as she took her time putting on her makeup, curling her hair and flipping her bangs in that high 1980′s flip.

“Come on Stacey, I need to get in there too!”  I whinned.

“Stac, hurry and  let your sisters get in the bathroom.  We have to get on the road.”  My mom yelled from down the hall.

I of course thinking I had won the argument smirked at her and she pretended to back hand me.  I flinched away and ran into the bathroom.  Colleen following right behind me.

We packed up the car and at 6:30 in the morning we were on our way.  I don’t know why I had spent any time in the bathroom the 10 hour drive to Oregon was going to mess up anything I had tried to accomplish anyway.

The drive was excruciatingly long.  It wasn’t until we had passed over into the east side of Oregon that I was amazed at the beauty that unfolded in front of me.   Growing up in Utah’s desert I was amazed at the size of the trees.  They were green Mammoths.  Every where you looked it was a different shade of green.  My breath had been taken away.  I thought I was in heaven until I stepped out of the car and felt the cold wet air surround me.  it was June for heaven’s sake.  I was needing a jacket.

We had pulled up in front of a cute brown one level home.  The yard was full of green grass and flowers of every color.  The huge pine trees and saplings that lined the yard gave it a very private feel even on a  suburban street.

As I began to walk towards the door, the front door opened and Jeff came running towards me.  The last 2 years had been good to him, he had grown out of all the baby fat and had finally out grown me.  We embrassed eachother and began to laugh and talk like we had never been parted.

First heartbreak.

It was quiet except for the sobs coming from my parents bathroom. I knew I was supposed to stay in bed, but I was curious. I slipped off my bunk bed and crept toward my bedroom door feeling the multi green shag carpet under my feet, my nightgown still wrapped around me. I slowly opened my door and noticed my parents door shut but could still hear my mom crying. My four year old heart was saddened to hear my mom but I know she cried like this most of the time. I heard muffled voices in the kitchen and decided to make my way down our hall. My room was at the end of the hall with my parents room to the right of me and my older sister to the left. I didn’t want either of them to hear me so I opted to walk closest to my mom’s bedroom door the floor didn’t squeak as loud on that side of the hall. The dim kitchen light was a beacon and a deterrent. I wanted to see who was in the kitchen and at the same time I was afraid. My older brother came out of the kitchen just as I reached the bathroom door. He didn’t notice me as he hurriedly ran down the stairs. The voices stopped but I could still hear movement and so my curiosity kept me moving. I walked into the kitchen, not seeing anyone there. I walked past the desk that was against the south wall and came into view of our dinning area. The cold linoleum under my feet I turned toward my dad who was sitting in one of our chairs at the table. He had his guitar and was placing it in his case. A bag sat next to him on the floor and his boots were on his feet. His cowboy hat sat on top of our table and that is when I realized my dad was leaving. I walked over towards him, my right hand playing with my lips as I always did when I was scared or nervous. My dad looked really mad, but his face softened a bit as I moved towards him.
“Where are you going dad?”
“Your mom has asked me to not live here anymore so I am going to go and stay with Stevie.”
With that my dad stood up with his guitar case in hand and bag in the other. He grabbed his hat off the table and walked past me. He stopped and turned back around to face me then he kneeled down next to me. He reached out his arms and embraced me. A quick kiss on the forehead and he was back on his feet and out the kitchen door.
“Don’t leave daddy!” I yelled as I chased him out of the kitchen.
He was already down the stairs with the door open. He shut the door without another word and I began to cry. My brother was next to me in a flash, I don’t even know how he got there so fast. He was always there to protect me and comfort me. He picked me up and held me as he walked me back to my room. I sobbed in his arms, but knew that my brother loved me and that comforted me.

What was your first record, tape, CD that you ever bought and how did it make you feel then and what do you think about it now?

I will start with my very first tape that I bought.

I went to my 6th grade class room and found the weekly paper on my desk. A paper written to children to get them enthusiastic about reading. On the front cover was a picture of a band that was fast becoming the biggest group of the 90′s. My heart started to beat faster as I scanned these really cute boys. Five really cute boys to be exact! My sights landed on one in particular and I was smitten. I was lost in the pre-teen puppy love of a 12 year old girl, nothing had ever made me want to read out of this paper before now. Now this blond, blue eyed, Boston native named Joey McIntyre had me wanting to read more. I took the paper home and showed my oldest sister exclaiming with excitement, ” Stac aren’t these boys so cute. I really want to buy their tape.” Oh, if only I knew the obsession I was getting myself into. My 12 year old self going to my older and much cooler sister was my way of making sure that they were okay to like. She told me she would take me to the mall if I had money to buy the tape. I just so happened to have some babysitting money and I dressed up for the trip to the mall. You never can be too careful as to whom you may bump into. We went into the music store and I began my search as Stacey found her music on the other side of the room. I found it after my long search through the N category and grabbed the tape with the picture that I saw on the paper. “Hangin’ Tough”. I took that tape home and played that tape over and over again. I had my first taste of pop music and at 12 I was so in love. I had all the fantasy’s of a girl at my age and I went to their concert, my very cool mom going with since I was 12. I bought all their tapes, video’s, dolls, posters, any magazine with their face on it, trading cards, pins. I was a maniac and my mom took notice and tried very hard to shut it down. It wasn’t too hard when the year I turned 14 I turned my heart towards a different kind of music. My mom missing my 12 year old taste ever since! This is very easy for me to say that New kids on the Block were my passion for a very short time in my life, but since they have rejoined I found myself having those very giddy feelings again and being very jealous of my friend who has seen them in concert. I have grown up and my music taste is so different now, but you never forget your first crush, or should I say in my life, my first obsession!

I lay in my bed, half asleep, trying to understand the annoying sound that I was hearing, the sudden recognition of the sound, I jumped out of my bed and headed to my chest of drawers to turn off my alarm clock. It never ceased to amaze me at how one sound could irritate me so much.

I felt very irritable today. I couldn’t shake the ornery feeling as I turned on the bathroom light, cursing that I had to be awake so early in the morning. no one should have to be awake at five in the morning. Especially for a job that they disliked so much, no fulfillment, no job satisfaction, and the creepiest boss ever. I hated that I had to be very mindful of what I was wearing around him. I didn’t want him to look down my shirt or stare at my chest in a shirt that might be on the tighter side. I didn’t feel like I dressed in a slutty manner in the first place, but with him around I really wanted to dress like my grandmother. This didn’t help my attitude at all as I looked at myself in the mirror. Should I refrain from makeup too. He would probably stare at me anyway. Uggggh!
