Well maybe I just like things Complicated!

That’s right…you heard me! I kinda likes me a little complication here and there. Well not in real life of course, but in a book … nothing better I tell ya! I love being confused and wondering how, when, why and what the @?#*! It’s these questions that keep me reading.

I started to tell my husband about a story I was writing and he just looked at me and said, “Wow, that’s kinda complicated. Maybe a little too complicated.”

Now I could have sat back and been offended, and lets be honest, for a moment I was. But then … then I sat back and thought to myself. Yeah, this is pretty complicated … Perfect!

How do you feel about complications? Do you welcome them with open arms as though they were the prodigal son? Or do you tend to shy away from them as not to confuse your readers?

Complications? People tell me I look for them because otherwise my life would be too dull. But my latest complication was not of my own invention.

I’ve been spinning around an idea for the NANOWRIMO that begins tomorrow. The story: A workaholic career girl gets big promotion heading new corporate division. She wants to take it, but wants to arrive as a more “whole and balanced” person. To do that she has to face her personal demons. The failed relationships, the love affair with food, the flirtation with drugs and alcohol.

This gal has a bunch of stuff to get through and all of a sudden I find she’s got a sister. Not just a sister, but a fraternal twin sister. Where did she come from? I have no idea. But I know she’s the total opposite and has a way of stirring the pot and waking all the demons.

My muse must have thought the story wouldn’t be interesting without her to make things complicated.

If there aren’t complications, it’s boring. Sometimes, since life isn’t easy, we want our books or movies to be, but 99% of the time, give me the complications. :)

The messier the better. I put my characters through a hell of a lot–but there’s always an romantic HEA in the end.

Great question! Thanks for telling me about your blog on twitter!
